Investing in Our Community
Investing in diverse community projects is a powerful way to address critical issues, promote equity, and empower underserved populations. Through this approach, we can build a more inclusive and resilient society that aligns with our foundation’s core values and mission. Ultimately, these investments benefit the community and elevate our influence and ability to drive positive change.
ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL GIVEAWAY EVENT: Since 2023, we have partnered with R.S. Lewis & Sons Funeral Home for a back-to-school backpack giveaway event to ensure students in the community have what they need to start the school year with confidence and enthusiasm. We are deeply grateful to all of our supporters and sponsors for their invaluable contributions, including: First Choice Sales & Merchandising, Guthrie’s Chicken, Melvin Burgess - Shelby County Assessor of Property, Dr. Charlie Caswell Jr. - Shelby County Commissioner (Dist. 6), K Kones, Impact Marketing, Rhonda Logan - Memphis City Council (Dist. 1), and the Chelsea Lodge #324 Prince Hall Affiliated Masons.
PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS: Since 2022, we have partnered with Communities In Schools of Memphis as a sponsor of the annual Pathways to Success Celebration. The Foundation contributes $2,500 each year to support HBCU-bound graduates, ensuring they are not only equipped with essential supplies for learning and living to begin their college journey successfully but also with an unyielding belief that their dreams are within reach.
FAMILY ENGAGEMENT - MOVIE OUTING: In conjunction with the Memphis Branch of the NAACP and Memphis College Prep, we were delighted to sponsor a recent showing of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" for a group of students and families. We loved seeing their smiles, some of whom were enjoying their first cinema experience! Special thank you to Walmart, our corporate sponsor!
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA DONATION: The Burroughs Foundation raised $300,000 for the Chickasaw Council of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Aligning with the Foundation's commitment to providing black and brown youth with resources and opportunities to achieve their full potential, the BSA's extraordinary mission aims to instill relevant values, including academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citizenship skills.
WINTER GIVEAWAY: Thanks to our incredible partners and supporters, we hosted a giveaway event that brought joy and essential support to families in need. The day was filled with smiles, generosity, and heartfelt moments that truly captured the spirit of community. Families received warm winter gear and experienced acts of kindness that will be remembered for years to come. This event reflects the mission of The Burroughs Foundation by empowering families and fostering community connections, creating lasting change and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
DANDY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: We proudly supported Dandy Youth Development (DYD) and made their trip to Washington, D.C. possible! The mission of DYD is to develop young Black boys and men to be productive leaders in our society through many means, including cultural activities that build their self-esteem and enhance their capacity to function effectively in a variety of settings.
